Federal tax is your yearly tax spread across paychecks, which can differ from W-4 withholding. Utah tax uses the 2026 flat rate of 4.45% and the payroll taxpayer-credit allowance. Not tax advice.

Utah uses a simple flat state income tax, which makes it easier to estimate your pay than in states with many tax brackets. Our free Utah paycheck calculator shows your take-home pay after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Utah state income tax, using 2026 rates.

Utah income tax rate for 2026

In 2026, Utah's income tax rate is 4.45%, down from 4.5% in 2025. The cut was made by Senate Bill 60 and applies to the whole 2026 tax year, starting January 1, 2026. Utah has steadily lowered its rate over the past several years.

Utah also gives most people a taxpayer tax credit, which reduces the tax for lower and middle incomes. In payroll, this shows up as a small yearly allowance:

  • Single: $485, reduced by 1.3% of wages above $9,348.
  • Married: $970, reduced by 1.3% of wages above $18,696.

For most full-time workers, this allowance phases out completely, so the effective rate is close to the full 4.45%. There is no city or county income tax in Utah.

What comes out of a Utah paycheck?

  • Federal income tax: 10% to 37%, depending on your income and filing status.
  • Social Security: 6.2% of wages, up to $184,500 in 2026.
  • Medicare: 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000 ($250,000 if married filing jointly).
  • Utah state income tax: 4.45% of taxable wages, minus the taxpayer credit allowance.
  • Optional deductions: 401(k) contributions, health insurance, and other benefits.

Example: take-home pay on $25 an hour in Utah

Say you are single, earn $25 an hour, work 40 hours a week, and are paid every two weeks, with no 401(k) or health deductions:

  • Gross pay: $2,000.00 per paycheck ($52,000 a year)
  • Federal income tax: about $156 per paycheck
  • Social Security and Medicare: $153 per paycheck
  • Utah state income tax: about $89 per paycheck
  • Take-home pay: about $1,602 per paycheck ($41,648 a year)

On a $60,000 salary, a single filer in Utah takes home about $1,835 every two weeks, or around $47,720 a year. Utah state tax is about $2,670 of that, and the total tax rate is about 20.5%.

Utah minimum wage and overtime

Utah follows the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, although most employers in the state pay well above it. For overtime, Utah follows federal law: most hourly workers earn 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Use our Overtime Pay Calculator to see how extra hours change your take-home pay.

Ways to keep more of your Utah paycheck

  • Contribute to a 401(k). Pre-tax contributions lower both your federal and Utah taxable income.
  • Save with my529. Utah offers a state tax credit for contributions to its my529 college savings plan.
  • Review your W-4. Your federal W-4 also controls how Utah withholds tax, so updating it can bring your withholding closer to what you really owe.
  • Use an HSA. Payroll HSA contributions lower income tax and, through a cafeteria plan, FICA tax too.
